The year 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Italy. Chunmiao Zheng, Vice President of the Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo (EIT), led a delegation to visit universities in Italy, including the Polytechnic University of Milan, University of Pisa, and Sapienza University of Rome, as part of EIT's effort to deepen cooperation with prominent Italian universities and build EIT's European "circle of friends".

The Polytechnic University of Milan on November 11

EIT Vice President Chunmiao Zheng led a delegation to the Polytechnic University of Milan on November 11. They were cordially received by Professor Alberto Guadagnini, Vice President of the university in charge of scientific research, and Professor Ilaria Valente, Vice President of the university in charge of teaching affairs. Representatives from either university introduced their discipline development, philosophies on how to run schools, most outstanding disciplines, and talent cultivation progress, and reached a preliminary intention of cooperation in areas such as joint doctoral training and summer school collaboration. The EIT delegation later visited the Polytechnic University of Milan Nanotechnology Center.

Founded in 1863, the Polytechnic University of Milan has always ranked among the top 20 engineering universities globally. With a broad range of research directions and high academic influence, the university is renowned for its excellence in engineering, architecture, and design disciplines.

University of Pisa on November 13

EIT Vice President Chunmiao Zheng visited the University of Pisa on November 13, where the delegation was warmly received by Professor Giovanni Federico Gronchi, Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Professor Giovanni Zanchetta, Director of the Department of Earth Sciences, and Arianna Biancani, head of the International Office.

The University of Pisa and EIT already enjoy a solid cooperation, as they are jointly hosting a "Sino-Italian Intergovernmental Science and Technology Cooperation Project" funded by the two national governments. During the meeting, representatives from either university explored mechanisms for scientific research cooperation and talent cultivation in fields such as information science, mathematics, and environmental science. They emphasized their respective strengths and reached a preliminary consensus on advancing the signing of a university-level cooperation agreement to deepen exchange and cooperation.

Founded in 1343, the University of Pisa is one of the oldest universities in Europe and enjoys an excellent international reputation in physics and astronomy, mathematics and computer science, biomedical and health sciences, as well as agricultural and environmental sciences.

Sapienza University of Rome on November 15

The EIT delegation visited Sapienza University of Rome on November 15. Dr. Graziella Gaglione and Ms. Martina Vizzani from the International Affairs Office had a discussion with the delegation on cooperation mechanisms in detail, laying a solid foundation for further promoting talent exchange and cultivation, as well as jointly building scientific research cooperation platforms between the two institutions. The exchange meeting was hosted by Professor Giovanni B. Andreozzi from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Natural Sciences at the Sapienza University of Rome. Several professors from the Earth Sciences Department of the university shared their latest research findings. Following the meeting, the delegation toured the large-scale experimental equipment at the Earth Sciences Department.

In the evening, the delegation attended an interactive session with Chinese international students from both Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Rome Tor Vergata, introducing in detail EIT's discipline arrangement, regional advantages, and talent policies.
Founded in 1303, Sapienza University of Rome is one of the largest and top-ranked universities in Italy, with outstanding achievements in geology and geophysics, as well as physics and astronomy.

EIT has been active in launching international exchanges and cooperation in recent years, engaging in talent development and academic exchange programs with renowned international universities to support EIT's growth and global vision. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Italy, as well as the 700th anniversary of the passing of Marco Polo. Marco Polo opened up a window for the Western world to understand China, and his legendary exchanges with China are a microcosm of mutual learning and exchange between Eastern and Western civilizations. EIT hopes to seize this opportunity to deepen its cooperation with Italian universities, launch multi-level collaborations, promote mutual learning among civilizations, jointly address challenges, and cultivate more "Marco Polos" in the new era.

Chair Professor Xiaoming Wang from the College of Science, Associate Research Professor Michele Lancia from the College of Engineering, and relevant persons in charge from the Global Engagement Office also attended this visit.
